Colombo, Jan. 29 (Daily Mirror)-Some universities were planning to invite politicians and presidential candidates to universities and such moves should be stopped, State Minister of Higher Education Dr. Suren Raghavan said today.

He told a news conference at the Government Information Department that politicizing of universities should be stopped.

"I learnt that some universities are planning to invite politicians and presidential candidates to universities. This should be stopped. Please stop politicizing universities. Universities are meant for academic activities. Politics is discussed in that scope. However, it should not be partial. The senate and its academics should decide who should be invited to universities for events," he said.

Referring to ragging in universities, he said some 82 complaints with regard to ragging have been received up to now from August last year since the establishment of the hotline 1997.

The Minister said only 30 of them came under ragging and that stern action would be taken against those found guilty of ragging incidents.

He said maximum punishment of 12 year-jail term could be imposed on those found guilty of ragging.

Commenting on the arrest of six fourth-year students of Sabaragamuwa University, he said they were not arrested for ragging and that they were arrested on a personal dispute with a group of batch mates.

The discourse between politicians and students regarding the future of the country is indeed an academic/intellectual exercise. Is the good minister afraid?

Balance Discussions with Politicians Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:42 AM

1st of all, he’s not a good minister. All over the world, most universities allowed politicians to speak

Former Lecturer in SL University system : 40 years ago . Monday, 29 January 2024 10:45 PM

This guy talking bullshit. Has he verbeen to a Sri Lankan university ? I know hw has a PhD. VCs are apponited by the President for many years now. Karunasena Kodithuwakku was a Political appointment to SJP in 80s. All the UGC charis so far appointed by the president or the prime minister including the one who is now in Prof. Sampath . Politicians are running Universities.

    Kamal Monday, 29 January 2024 11:57 PM

What a moron. Do you want the students organisations to appoint VC's and UGC chairs?

    Saman Tuesday, 30 January 2024 08:59 AM

Only Chancellor 's are appointed by the president not the Vice Chancellor.Pl.Don't comment without knowing.

    VRAJ Monday, 29 January 2024 10:50 PM

IF YOU WANT TO STUDY POLITICAL SCIENCE OR SOCIOLOGY WHERE YOU GO???? MUST THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SPEAK FRONT OF THE ACADEMIC. THE UNI STUDENTS ASK QUESTION.

    Jayantha Tuesday, 30 January 2024 09:06 AM

Ha.Ha. non of the presidential candidates who are expected to contest this years presidential election have done have done political science.

    Viraj Monday, 29 January 2024 11:29 PM

I dont think it is a good idea. The enviorenment in the state universities do not provide for free thinking. Over the past 4 decades at least socialist ideology has been poured down the throat of undergraduates. Those failing to fall in line are made to suffer consequences. As such if political and presidential candidates are brought into state universities there will be no level playing field, it just cannot happen in the current enviorenment. The sole purpose would be to further promote socialist and leftist thinking into the students minds and brainwash any who many not have aleady succumed to the intimitatory tactics of breaking the will and self thinking and rationalisation of individuals. A good example is the ongoing ragging. Why is it done? Simply to make students subservient to the sadistic elders. Who leads the ragging. Your guess is good enough.

Yes , they will receive their JVP leader but will boo the others or disrupt their meetings. The university students mentality has always been like this. But after coming out of the university majority of then become worst capitalists or they become lazy inefficient public servants or they become very corrupt public servants.

    Senpera Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:07 AM

Universities are under a reign of terror of the JVP militant arm IUSF, they must be dismantled for the future of Sri Lanka

Anurudda Heenetigala Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:23 AM

I think presidential candidates visiting Universities is a great idea for teo reasons. First of all, it will show how stupid and useless our future leaders are. Second, it will show how stupid and clueless our University students are. So it's a win-win scenario.

Nothing to Be Afraid Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:45 AM

All over the world, most universities allowed politicians to speak

    Kumara Tuesday, 30 January 2024 03:04 AM

Politicians must speak with Uni students who should encourage educated well mannered persons to enter parliament. We do not want men with murderous and thuggish men enter as MPs.

Ranil the terrified Tuesday, 30 January 2024 03:10 AM

If they invite the corrupt Ranil rajapaksa you would have no objection. But these criminals are scared to go near a university. It will be leaders like AKD that the smart people like to listen to.

Kumar Soysa Tuesday, 30 January 2024 03:28 AM

Excell Move! Very good for the person seeking office and for the university students.

    L Jaya Tuesday, 30 January 2024 04:00 AM

Is this bloke a SL citizen? There is no harm of inviting political candidates to universities. However, as most of the university unions are driven by JVP and other leftist movements, they may give preference to those candidates and not the others.

    Ram Tuesday, 30 January 2024 04:14 AM

Let's send RW first. The Uni Students are interested in developing new ragging systems. Good to start it with the Head of State

    Ram Tuesday, 30 January 2024 04:17 AM

In my mind the Universities must invite all candidates to a public debate. The separate Universities can appoint moderators to conduct the debate. I believe this will be more fruitful

    H.N.A.Majeed Tuesday, 30 January 2024 09:52 AM

This must be done so that the people will come to know which candidate has the vision and determination to do what's best for the country. Needless to say the majority of the candidates don't have any idea of governance.

    city Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:02 AM

it will be fair if all candidates are treated and respected equally.

    Jude Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:23 AM

In DEVELOPED countries it's the norm candidates addressing the university students!! SL wants to do lots of stuff like the western countries, then what's wrong with presidential candidates addressing the university students!???

    Nandika Tuesday, 30 January 2024 10:42 AM

Not correct. I am familiar with USA, Canada, UK and Australia. Presidential and Prime Ministerial candidates do not go visiting unversities as a part of the political process. If there is one example that is known please share it for our wider benefit.

    Ama Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:43 AM

You tell MR not to go PANSALA and making political statements. In the past, he had done this MANY MANY TIMES. Politicians should NOT use Worship places to make statements.

Charlie Chaplin Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:51 AM

The reason this stupid guy “talks like a stupid” is because he knows that 80% of the population think like him. They are as stupid and will believe all that he says.

Ranil the pin gona Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:53 AM

We have a "president" who is terrified of the citizens. Please go away and hand over the job to a person who is brave.

Ranil the Rajapaksa maid Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:56 AM

    Ranil the gutless wonder.

State Minister of Higher Education Dr. Suren Raghavan talks as if he has never been to a university. Don't you know that many universities in Europe and USA and other countries invite political leaders of various political parties to address the students?

    Jude Tuesday, 30 January 2024 08:00 AM

Hey Raghwan political candidates addressing students is okay!! The young generation should hear it straight from the horse's mouth!!

    Sandy Tuesday, 30 January 2024 08:04 AM

Marxists like debates and chaos, they have nothing else to contribute.

A Rejuvenated University Academic Tuesday, 30 January 2024 09:15 AM

State Minister of Higher Education Dr. Suren Raghavan is aging fast. He must take the anti-aging drug developed by Colombo University fast before he becomes obsolete and useless.

    Mizaru Tuesday, 30 January 2024 09:33 AM

Why not. Ranil keeps visit montessoris and primary school. Anura can visit the Universities. What is wrong.

    Abd Tuesday, 30 January 2024 10:20 AM

Undergraduates are young adults with voting power and analytical mind with education, invitee,if any, would have to answer question ,,which will certainly influence their future, the current president, who is ready and love discussions of this nature will lead others, so why this man is grumbling

    kushan Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:10 PM

These majority of university students represent socialist parties and they want to invite political leaders and shame them by asking embarrassing questions. but when their leader comes the answers will be perfect as its pre planned questions and answers.

NV Jen Tuesday, 30 January 2024 02:56 PM

Most of the University students are left oriented. They believe in communist policies that have failed everywhere else. The students boycott/ picket/ protest for the drop of a hat even. Later on when they join an organization as employees same behavioural pattern is observed and no wonder productivity is low in Sri Lanka.

    dana Tuesday, 30 January 2024 06:07 PM

Probability of winning of RW is very low, and he has dirty and stinking past, with such a back ground,it’s impossible to face such a young crowd, but it doesn’t mean others too can’t go, if government brings in such a rule, others will conduct massive meetings with U’grads

navratne willamune Tuesday, 30 January 2024 07:19 PM

presidential candidates need to be scrutinized about their policies, etc find out who /and where the money comes from for their campaign, any foreign country involvement etc the....

    Hemantha Wednesday, 31 January 2024 09:10 AM

Start with making a diligent and thorough investigation into the NPP funding sources and volumes over the past five years. A lot of commentators here would be much wiser after those findings are made public.

    Sinna Wednesday, 31 January 2024 10:24 AM

Presidential candidate is must prepare to have good rapport with every strata of the society, out of them, those undergraduates are very important segment, if presidential aspirants can speak to them friendly, with a little bit of humor, without sarcasm and heavy security as which RW used to, then allow those candidates to meet students, in other hand, students should ready to allow them to come and face them, U’grads, should make use these opportunities fully, how they handled Mr.Dudley sirisena is very silly, he is a notorious black marketeer, it’s great if, u’grads utilize that opportunity to grill him and expose him with advance preparation, without, just shouting at him, like uneducated vagabond, what we can find in any junction ,that could bring more honor to Kalaniya university
