The government mulls the liquidation of certain institutions under its programme for restructuring state-owned enterprises (SOEs), a top source said.
The government has decided to restructure SOEs which are commercially oriented in accordance with the programme of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In this process, some SOEs have been identified to be redundant at the moment. As such, they will be liquidated.
Asked for a comment in this regard, State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe confirmed that some state ventures remain redundant at the moment. He said it is a long process to liquidate them.
“We have to look at legal and other aspects involved in the process. We cannot liquidate a state institution in the way a private company is done,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Good move. Move them under a seperate 'assets earmarked for liquidation' vehicle which would merely focus on winding them up. They need personnel with specific skills and the process could take years to wrap up. The ongoing entities should be under a separate vehicle, and those identified to be divested in yet another. That way the focus on delivering the desired outcome is not diluted or lost. Get on with the job.

All the loss making SOEs must be closed down or privatise. No argument on this.Therr will be some minsters prefer to keep the SOE so that they can employee their catchers . This is way happened in the past and it's continues. Having labour union is a curse since it has caused the down fall of most of the SOEs. Good examples are Sathosa, Engineering Corporation etc. The board of directors of SOEs must be politically indipendant professionals. But to see all the SOEs are full of political henchmen. This is the present situation.

State owned Enterprises should be liquidated if these organizations cannot run at a profit as we have seen in the past that these organizations have been postponing for liquidation otherwise these organizations become parasites on the Public purse. All these politicians always give excuses that there are snags in liquidation. We want politicians who are go getters in implementing policies which may not be popular with the public but will have a macro effect on the economy of the country.

You can liquidate bankrupt SOE's if you have the will. If you keep giving numbskull reasons, you will keep saying this until your grave. This is also reason why we are bankrupt due to fools like you in the helm.

The instructions like government railways, petroleum cooperation, and the Ceylon electricity board should be so liquidated Thus those institutions are so far not fulfilling the aspirations of the general public Further those are running at a loss whenever the progress is reviewed. Therefore the government should take appropriate measures to liquidate and privatise the those institutions soon

Isn't it illegal to run a company or operate a business knowing it is insolvent?
