Social media report on praising AKD for not celebrating New Year is fake: Fr. Cyril Gamini

Colombo, April 16 (Daily Mirror) - The social media report claiming that he had praised President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for declining to celebrate the New Year is fake, said Member of the Communications Committee of the Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando.

Fr. Fernando was referring to the news item circulated over the social media recently claiming that he had praised President Dissanayake for not celebrating the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. This report which quoted Fr. Fernando said that no one should engage in any festivity at a time when the Christians mark the suffering and death of Christ Jesus.

“I have never made the comment which is being circulated on the social media. We condemn the effort of the interested party which uploaded this post over social media to create religious hatred,” Fr. Fernando added.

This report appeared on social media, days after Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcom Ranjith called on all Catholics to cooperate with those who celebrate the New Year and work towards promoting brotherhood.

What if another party leader lives a life similar to the same as AKD and does not participate in the traditional event like Sinhala Avurudu? Can't imagine the size of mud slinging campaign against that person by the JVP.
