The Provincial Department of Health Services, Northern Province has implemented a ban on the use of social media for health workers including doctors during duty hours.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Provincial Director of Health Services Northern Province, Dr T. Sathyamoorthy said, "The decision comes after numerous complaints were received, alleging that some health workers were using their mobile phones to browse social media platforms instead of attending to patients seeking treatment,"

However, Dr.Sathyamoorthy stated that the ban specifically applies to social media usage during duty hours and does not restrict the use of mobile phones for legitimate work-related purposes.

"Health workers are still permitted to use their mobile devices for communication, accessing medical resources, and other essential tasks," he highlighted.

The official further clarified that the ban was not intended to infringe upon the personal lives of health workers, but rather to address the issue of negligence towards patients. It was emphasized that there are no restrictions on the use of mobile phones during non-duty hours, allowing health workers to engage with social media platforms and other personal activities at their leisure.

It is a good move. As an expatriate visiting my old Jaffna , I was shocked to see doctors in Jaffa main hospital behaving so rudely with the patients and carrying their mobile phones in one hand and reading intermittently. The most funniest part in watching these doctors in Jaffna was , their poor standard of English. But with “ Doctor” title they are fooling the poor masses as most of the educated Tamils have already left Jaffna permanently.

Excellent move. As Damith W suggested it should be banned not only in health sector but in all government departments, when a person is on duty. Of course there are exceptions to contact people for advice. This is a form of discipline for high productivity.

Ban it for the on duty traffic police officers too. They stand under the shade fiddling on their mobiles rather than keep track of errand drivers

Dangers of exceeding limit Monday, 18 September 2023 07:45 AM

All inventions are to facilitate human lives. But they have become an epidemic, such as the mobile phone, to an extent that users - specially kids have become hooked to it, and have to take psycho treatment. There are cases of suicide among kids and mental disorder. Everything should be used within limits.

The Jaffna Doctor's comment clearly indicates the poor standard of English mentioned by D Anton.

    Dr. J.P. Jeganathan Monday, 18 September 2023 10:15 AM

What is the use of imposing ban during working hours only. Some will work on day shift some will work night shift. This is a foolish idea.

    Entrepreneur Monday, 18 September 2023 10:16 AM

@nothing can be changed - this is why there should be two states in one country. One will become progressive while the other will lag behind.

    Dr. G.M. Samarakoon Monday, 18 September 2023 10:16 AM

Why only in the North? Why not other provinces too.

    Ron Monday, 18 September 2023 10:21 AM

Human Being Monday, 18 September 2023 12:15 PM

Health sector workers in Colombo, especially at Government hospitals, they think they are everything, above everyone, behaves so rudely to the patients, and visitors, this should be prevented at any cost. It does not cost you anything to be nice to another fellow human being.

    Tupac Monday, 18 September 2023 01:07 PM

Social media should be banned in all government offices with immediate effect!!

    Ram Monday, 18 September 2023 01:22 PM

Not in hospital All work places must be advised to avoid use of mobile phone. No one works during work time. Even the labourer use phone while on duty. Like other developed countries here also need to ban

    KP Tuesday, 19 September 2023 06:44 AM

Impractical idea without thinking things through. X-ray images are shared among doctors even between different hospitals through WhatsApp. Unlike in the past, numerous transfers of patients have been avoided. Chat groups are used to get a second opinion. There are many other instances of putting these platforms to good use. If someone reads a book during work hours are you going to ban that? Negligence is anyway an offense that can be dealt with existing laws Blanket bans are counterproductive.
