Siyane Kumari engine catches fire at Enderamulla

Colombo, January 20 (Daily Mirror) - The engine of the Siyane Kumari express train caught fire at the Enderamulla railway station this afternoon, the Railways Department said.

The M9 872 train, running from Colombo Fort to Kandy, was affected. Videos of the incident have been circulating on social media, showing flames coming out of the engine's chimney.

The train was crowded at the time of the fire, but fortunately no one was injured.

The incident caused minor delays on both the main and the Puttalam lines.

Arrangements are underway to divert the train, which was enroute to Kandy, to the Ragama Railway Station. A replacement engine will be used for the train to continue its journey to Kandy.

The fire was brought under control and a team from the Railways Department is conducting an investigation into the incident.

This M9 Engines are very unreliable for our tracks and conditions. This Engines were bought in 80s and did not perform well for not even 10 years. Later few Engines of this model were modified by our local Engineers. These were purchesed due to political influence from France .

Sri Lanka had railways long before any Middle Eastern countries and many other Asian countries. First all locomotives ,carriages ,and the tracks were made in Britain and maintained by British Engineers. Then after the Independence the super Canadian locomotives were introduced together with comfortable carriages from China. Sri Lankan railways continued to remain one of the safest railways in the whole world until about 15 years ago. Then the corrupt Rajapaksas introduced India into our railways and suddenly derailments and fires have become so frequent that lot of people are frightened to travel long journeys by trains. The only way out now is to hand over our railways to any country that has very advanced railways technology for a limited period of ten years. And the possible candidates are China , Japan, or France.
