Six middlemen arrested accepting bribes at DMT Werahera branch

Six middlemen were arrested at the Department of Motor Traffic Werahera branch (DMT) today by the officers attached to the Special Police Investigation Unit while accepting a bribe, a senior police officer said.

He said the middlemen were arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs.10,000 for each individual to receive the new driving licence.

They were arrested after deploying decoys by the Police Investigation Unit.

"The middlemen have accepted bribes promising to get a new driving licence without any delays," the police official said.

When questioning the suspect, the police revealed details that several officials of the DMT had connections with them to issue the driving licences expeditiously.

A further police investigation is being carried to determine whether any DMT officials are involved in this racket, the official said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
