Six Peradeniya Uni students arrested over attack on fmr VC

Six students of the Peradeniya University have been arrested last night over the attack on former Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son.

Police said the students were arrested after they surrendered to the Peradeniya Police.

The suspect students aged between 23 and 25 are residents of Nittambuwa, Sadalangala, Girithale, Matale, Henegamuwa and Galagamwatta.

Police said they have identified six more students wanted over the incident and investigations are underway to apprehend them. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

When the university in charge is planning to implement the law, these goons went on a rampage to seek revenge. Since they will loose all the hooligan privileges, instead of studying.

Lock the ones wth JVP and Peratugami connections and release ithers and allow them to complete the degree. It is JVP and Peratugami fellows dont allow innocent students to continue their studies but to engage in thuggery.

Ranil should not anger student community more and more over this incident...He was very much angry about all student protests ... Although there is no connection to this incident and politics....students are against this government.. especially youths of this country.. I do not endorse what they did but they must be punished according to the law of the country...but at the same time judges must see what exactly happened...no one side story will service any justice .. What anger students ? What was their relations with VC and his son before this incident..?.VCs ; Deans; Heads and all academic staff must know it is public fund university education...so they have moral obligations to deliver their service fairly and treated the students well..but to be honest some academics in our university are arrogant and so rude and students have to bow down as matter of respect...that is why they display their anger and wrath like this ..so don't take one side ..judges on this matter must be neutral

The comment made by Sri is utter nonsense. These are criminals not students. They have assaulted people and caused destruction to property. If students are unhappy with university administration they can take it up at the forum established for that purpose. Students are in universities to do higher studies and to learn towards a profession. They have not entered universities to do politics. JVP and Peratugami who use uni students for their political agenda should realize they will never take up power in this country if they continue with their hidden agenda.

The violent behaviour of students coming from rural township was due to the poverty and suppression they have undergone in their upbringing. The society is equally responsible for developing such characters, especially class differences, affluent v poverty, English speaking v non English speaking. While not condoning the violent acts, society Sri Lankans live in is to be corrected.
