Showery conditions to intensify in several areas, Met Dept. warns

Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology today warned that several parts of the island are likely to experience enhanced showery conditions over the next few days due to the active southwest monsoon.

In a weather advisory issued this morning, the Forecasting Division said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the districts of Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara.

The Department noted that fairly heavy falls, exceeding 75mm, could be expected at certain places, particularly in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, a few showers are also likely in the North-central province and in the districts of Mannar, Hambantota and Matale.

In addition to the wet weather, strong winds of 40-50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

The public has been urged to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures to minimize damages caused by temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Met Department advised the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as weather conditions are likely to fluctuate during this period.
