Showery conditions expected to increase from tomorrow



Colombo, June 9 (Daily Mirror) - Showery conditions are expected to intensify in the southwestern part of the island from tomorrow (10), accompanied by strong wind gusts over the island and in the surrounding sea areas, the Meteorology Department said. 

In a weather advisory issued today, the Met Department urged the public to remain attentive to future forecasts and updates as adverse conditions develop.

According to the forecast, showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Additionally, showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the sea areas off the coast from Mannar to Mullaitivu via Kankasanthurai during the evening or night.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach 40 kmph, increasing up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. In other sea areas surrounding the island, winds will reach around 35 kmph, with gusts rising to 50 kmph in the areas extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaitivu.

The sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while the areas from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaitivu are expected to be fairly rough.

The wave heights may increase up to 3.0 metres in the sea areas off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The Department has advised naval and fishing communities to exercise caution, as temporarily strong wind gusts and very rough seas could occur during thundershowers.

The public is strongly urged to stay informed through official weather updates and advisories issued by the Department.
