Parliament, Feb. 08 (Daily Mirror)- The government has observed that there are some shortcomings in the recently enacted Online Safety Act and the government is open to bring in amendments to the Act, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said today.

Responding to questions by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and SJB MP Harsha de Silva, Minister Rajapakshe told Parliament that it was pointless calling the Act as erronous and requested the Opposition to propose amendments to the Act.

"There are shortcomings in this Act. We also have observed some shortcomings. We are open to make amednments. You propose the required amendments. We will discuss them. Power is vested with Parliament. We should discuss it in Parliament and make necessary amendments without calling the Act erronous and it should be set on fire," the Minister said.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that it was praiseworthy that the government has admitted that the Online Safety Act is errounous and called for a party leaders' meeting to rectify the shortcomings.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane said he had no objections to discussions over the Act.

It is NOT shortcomings, in fact it is SHORT SIGHTED VIEW. Dance only till Sep/Oct

    Rihan Thursday, 08 February 2024 03:24 PM

Absolutely correct. This is a totally incompetent Minister with his own political agenda.

    Backfired Thursday, 08 February 2024 04:35 PM

Exactly. Why was it pushed out so fast into law when so many parties objected to many clauses in the act? Obviously there was an agenda to silence the majority but seems it has backfired in other areas.

    TheScale Thursday, 08 February 2024 11:52 AM

This minister how talks as if he the ultimate authority in the law of Sri Lanka cannot draft a bill within the framework of the Sri Lanka constitution. What an idiot. He must resign.

    TheblindFold Thursday, 08 February 2024 11:55 AM

Bring a no confidence motion against the speaker for signing this bill into a law without studying it.

    Steve Thursday, 08 February 2024 12:06 PM

It is not a question of shortcomings, The act is politically designed to silence the general public. We will in the process isolate the country from the rest of the world with dire consequences , especially financially as it will hit all sectors of the economy.

    Ahaemmed Thursday, 08 February 2024 12:17 PM

It's good that he the person who has brought this bill to parliament has admitted there is many amendments has to do. After wasteing tax payers money for numbers of days at parliament finally they need discuss again. Fail is the Sign of this cabinet and parliament.

    joshua Thursday, 08 February 2024 12:25 PM

Then why did the blind MPs raise their hand to approve the Bill? What kind of idiots we have in that Parliament. It is a shame that the views of the Supreme Court has not been adopted before the final bill was approved. We also have a speaker who signs anything left on the table.

    Geekiyanege Thursday, 08 February 2024 12:55 PM

Yes, it's the proof that our MPs knowledge and attitude' no need to argument. It's time to change the this entire system.

    sunil Thursday, 08 February 2024 01:40 PM

Don't worry dear, NPP will amend after they come to power.

    Ram Thursday, 08 February 2024 02:30 PM

Speaker said the Act was passed incorporating the SC recommendations. According to Wijedasa it is not so. I wonder if the Speaker is still in his nappies?

Gayantha Hemachandra Thursday, 08 February 2024 03:15 PM

Minister Wijedasa…. This so called Online Safety Act is nothing but something you have tried to enact to suppress growing anger and dissent towards your government. You should understand the fact that making draconian laws without remedying people’s sufferings and hardships are like tightening your underwear without curing diarrhoea, … mate .

    A Good Citizen Thursday, 08 February 2024 04:04 PM

Short comings from short culprit and he will be kicked out shortly!!!

    dinesh Thursday, 08 February 2024 04:29 PM

Shortcomings??? Joker of a Justice Minister we have...anything you have missed in taking away peoples fundamental rights ?? don't worry time is running out....

    Sambo Thursday, 08 February 2024 07:29 PM

If you knew that there was so much short comings in the bill why was it passed in haste and now speaking of amendments. Where are your brains situated.

    melvilleperera Friday, 09 February 2024 08:27 AM

as Minister of Justice it is shocking that you did not observe the short comings and worse you send it to the Supreme Court via the Speaker apparently who has blindly signed it, for its approval wasting court time and taxpayers money and the SC must be having an exntremely poor opinion of your judicial expertise knowing the Bill has serious damaging local and int'l implications if not complications considering the public and int'l outcry against it and your laissez faire reply it can be debated and amended is another waste of Parliament time and taxpayers money.

    dana Friday, 09 February 2024 09:08 AM

With mistakes or not, this silly speaker put his sign there,so it is now a regulation, now what will happen to a person ,who is doing a crime coming under this act

    Citizens Friday, 09 February 2024 04:52 PM

Oh! What a Minister of Justice we have? After the Speaker had signed and gazatted the bill he is admitting shortcomings in the bill so do we need a Justice Minister like him?
