’’Shocked, devastated’’: Aviation Minister on Ahmedabad Air India plane crash



New Delhi: Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said he was "shocked and devastated" upon learning about the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad. The plane was carrying 242 passengers, Air India has confirmed.

"We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families," Me Naidu said.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. The flight was going to London. It went down between 1 pm and 2 pm.

Air India said flight No. AI 171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today. "At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest," Air India said in a statement.

Visuals from the site show a thick plume of grey smoke rising from the ground. At least two dozen ambulances have arrived and some have taken away injured people to hospital. The police have diverted traffic from the area.
