The Director General of Sports, Professor (Rear Admiral) Shemal Fernando was cleared by the Court of Appeal yesterday from the allegations of Contempt of Court.
At the commencement of the day’s proceedings, the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice M. T. Mohammed Laffar and Hon. Justice K. Priyantha Fernando announced their decision.
The Court of Appeal upheld the Attorney General Department’s preliminary objections filed by Additional Solicitor General, Sumathi Dharmawardena, President’s Counsel with regard to Sri Lanka Rugby ‘Contempt of Court’ case and the Court recalled the rule issued against the Director General of Sports.
Professor Fernando has looked after all needs of the country’s second most popular sport of Rugby as the Competent Authority of Sri Lanka Rugby during the last 12 months.
During the last 12 months rugby sprang to fame under his leadership as the Competent Authority of Sri Lanka Rugby. (AO)
