Colombo, Sept. 4 (Daily Mirror) - Former Minister Shashindra Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody over charges under the Public Property Act, has filed a bail application before the Colombo High Court.

After considering submissions, High Court Judge Lanka Jayaratne fixed the matter for October 2 to examine the facts relating to the bail request.

Rajapaksa was arrested by the Bribery Commission on August 6 in connection with an incident where compensation of Rs. 8.85 million was allegedly obtained by exerting pressure on officials of the Damage Assessment Office. The compensation was said to be in respect of a building and other property at Sevanagala, belonging to the Mahaweli Authority, which had been destroyed during the recent public protest movement.

Following his arrest, the Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered that he be remanded, and on August 12, the Magistrate’s Court refused his bail application.

Subsequently, Rajapaksa, through his counsel, filed this revision bail application before the Colombo High Court, seeking to set aside the magistrate’s order refusing bail and to obtain release on bail.
