INDIA (HindustanTimes) - Shakib Al Hasan stood firm on his decision not to withdraw the timed out appeal against Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews during BAN vs SL World Cup 2023 match.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has no regrets about firstly, appealing for timed out against Angelo Mathews and then not withdrawing it despite being asked by the umpires during a World Cup 2023 match in Delhi on Monday. On-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth - two vastly experienced ICC Elite Panel match officials - asked Shakib twice if he would want to withdraw the appeal, said the fourth umpire, Adrian Holdstock but the Bangladesh all-rounder did not change his mind. As a result, Mathews became the first cricketer in the history of international cricket to be given timed out.

According to Rule 40.1.1 of ICC's playing conditions, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, timed out.”

‘Umpires asked me whether I want to call him back, I said no': Shakib

Shakib said he was just playing according to the laws of the game and if anyone has a problem with that he should ask the ICC to change the rules.

"I appealed to the umpires, umpire told me whether you're going to call him back or not, if I said he's out, then you call him back, it doesn't look good. I said I won't call him back," Shakib said in the post-match press conference after Bangladesh won the heated match by three wickets.

"Well, then ICC should look into it and change the rules," the Bangladesh captain said when asked about the spirit of cricket.

He added: “It's in the laws. I don't know if it's right or wrong, but I had to take a decision to, you know, make sure that my team wins, and whatever I had to do, I have to do it,” Shakib, who adjudged Player of the Match for his 82 off 65 and 2/57 with the ball.

The incident took place in the 25th over of the Sri Lankan innings. Mathews wasn’t ready to face his first ball within two minutes of the previous dismissal - as confirmed by the fourth umpire - after his helmet strap broke and he called for a replacement helmet.

By the time a teammate ran out with a new helmet, more than three minutes had elapsed. When Bangladesh appealed, on-field umpires Erasmus and Illingworth got together to have a lengthy discussion. Upon knowing that Bangladesh won't withdraw the appeal, they decided to give the marching orders to Mathews, much to the disappointment of the Sri Lankan camp.

Mathews, a former Sri Lankan captain, however, did not agree with the fourth umpire's version. He claimed the Sri Lankan team has visual evidence to prove that there were about five seconds remaining on the clock when he was at the crease. He couldn't take the strike because his helmet strap broke.

"Yeah, because I haven't done anything wrong. I have two minutes to get to the crease and get myself ready, which I did. And then it was an equipment malfunction.

"...We have the video evidence where from the time the catch was taken, and then from the time I walked into the crease, I still had five seconds after breaking my helmet. So, we talk about safety of the players - you guys tell me if It's right for me to take my guard without my helmet on? It's just pure common sense," he said.

As far as the match was concerned, Bangladesh chased down Sri Lanka's 280-run target with 8.5 overs and 7 wickets to spare.

Well mate Please talk less, otherwise we will see more videos of you behaving badly. looks like some anger management issues.

    Bandu Tuesday, 07 November 2023 06:16 PM

I like to see in the future captains allowed to carry stop watches to time when the new batters are ready to face the ball. What a joke thanks to rules and Bangladeshis.

    Jude Tuesday, 07 November 2023 08:05 PM

Yes Rajiv, Shakib aragant SOB, once in an domestic game Shakib kicked the stumps coz umpire didn't give an LBW appeal in his favour!!

Amal Fernando Tuesday, 07 November 2023 03:45 PM

Shame on you. Not surprised when we see the things happening globally. Gentleman's game now played by third grade sportsmen.

Have to expect the unexpected on the Indian sub-continent.If the purpose was to demoralize an already demoralized side then that has been achieved and to further demoralize a nation at a time when the country needs to bolster its confidence .Feels like big time politics to me not just an incident on the field but then we are not the experts. Strangely not much support for Matthews from the country itself, basically left to the players to defend themselves from what I have viewed so far anyway

Out is out. The issue here is Mathews was not aware of the rule. But the bottom line Sri Lanka miserably failed to defend the total and win the game. Lets speak of the loss and our position. SL just did not have a target and a game plan.

    Ram Tuesday, 07 November 2023 04:23 PM

I place the blame on our Mathews. If he knew this rule he should have faced one ball before raising the helmet issue as it was a spinner bowling at the time. If he did not know the rule he must resign from all forms of cricket as he has captained all 3 formats not knowing this rule.

    Gaston Tuesday, 07 November 2023 04:43 PM

Angelo batted or not, our guys never had a target of 350 for a do-or-die game. At least to cover up for the shame of recent developments. They were happy to score leisurely, and drop all the catches given by the struggling Shakib and Santo. They capitalized on the weak Sri Lankan team, and shamed them while our guys thought behaving arrogantly in the field would save the game.

If there was a delay, the Bangladeshi players would have to suffer field restrictions towards the latter part.

    Punchi Tuesday, 07 November 2023 05:06 PM

we are so upset we must return the US1 million of free medicines Bangladesh gave us recently.

Everything is not about laws. Some decisions are even more superior than laws. Those are the laws of humanity. That is why even the umpires has given the greedy Bangali captain a chance to withdraw. He missed a lovely lesson of been a gentleman and a lesson of sportsmanship. Been technically correct is not good enough in sports.

    Bandu Tuesday, 07 November 2023 06:07 PM

Well cricket is a gentleman's game. that is why we say ; Its not cricket, old boy, when something is done wrong. Here there was no advantage to Mathew and was not time wasting. Even in Mankading, the non striker takes an advantage but still the bowlers warn them in the true spirit. Sad Sad Bangladesh.

Cutting and pasting Tuesday, 07 November 2023 09:51 PM

@Bandu. Once again you are reflecting my thoughts word to word. Unlike in Mankading here the batsman is not gaining any advantage whatdoever. Time out was probably introduced to avoid batsmen using delaying tactics to avoid their team's possible defeat and achive a draw. I think cutting and pasting, without modifying, sections of law from one format to another must have landed in this issue.

Sri Lankans struggle to abide by the law Tuesday, 07 November 2023 06:25 PM

You can’t have a rule and then expect players to abide by the “spirit “ of the rule. Either scrap the rule or uphold the rule. How about if Police were expected to abide by the spirit of the speeding rule!

Law vs rule Tuesday, 07 November 2023 09:54 PM

My friend law and order are different from rules and regulations. Don't compare apples with oranges. No wonder SL is in the current predicament.

    Sambo Tuesday, 07 November 2023 07:49 PM

The batsmen also should be ready and not wait to come to the crease and then find out he has a broken bat or a broken strap in his helmet.

Politicians are from the same population as you are. Tuesday, 07 November 2023 10:01 PM

He did not come with a broken strap. Did you watch the visul??? The strap came off while he was tightening it at the batting creace when he was about to face the bowler. Please don't distort facts. Don't blame the politicians for SL'S current predicament. The politicians are from the same population as you are. How does anyone expect the country to improve !!!!

Kapila Fernando Tuesday, 07 November 2023 09:44 PM

Surely if it was the other way around Kusal will not witdraw neither.

    Francisco Wednesday, 08 November 2023 12:22 AM

June 2014, England and Sri Lanka met in the fifth ODI at Birmingham. Sachitra Senanayake was bowling in the 44th over. Jos Buttler walks out of the crease on the third ball. Senanayake broke the stumps. The umpires then asked captain Angelo Mathews if he wanted to withdraw the appeal. But Mathews did not withdraw the plea. Buttler is out. Then it was a gentleman game to.

Many a thing can happen between a cup and a sip. A batsman may trip and fall. Reasonableness enters when the law doesn't specify without exception/discretion.

    groundboy Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:00 AM

Hostile sportsmanship has been coached very well? The ICC law is correct because time wasting should not be allowed in a day long fixture weather it is deliberate or not. Deliberate time wasting happens in school annual big matches. But at this level, professionals should have known better that law is there for man and man is not a slave of law. Specially gentlemen. Hard liner attack with in the limits.

    Cherath Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:07 AM

With all the right vocabulary and 'clever reasoning' by Shakib Al Hassan, I doubt very much if he would have refused to withdraw his appeal if it was Kohli or any other Indian batsman, instead of Mathews. (Remember semi finals at Eden Gardens, some years back?)

    Cherath Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:14 AM

Sambo - The strap broke when Mathews attempted to fasten the helmet at the crease. How could he have foreseen such? That was why he called for a new helmet.

    Ron Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:52 AM

Once a pona time its call gentleman's game now days its about money money money.....only one team wins others must be tought how to take a lost create sporty sportsmanship
