Colombo, April 18 (Daily Mirror) - A video circulating on social media showing a woman being brutally assaulted in Moragahahena has sparked public concern, with police confirming that a suspect has been arrested.
According to the Sri Lanka Police, the incident had occurred after the victim had requested her neighbour to reduce the noise of firecrackers, which she said was disturbing the dogs at her residence. Following an investigation, Moragahahena Police arrested the suspect, a 54-year-old resident of Velmilla, after recording the victim’s statement.
The suspect was produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court on April 17 and was remanded until April 24.
In a separate incident, police reported that a woman was assaulted by a group near the Gokarella-Medalanda junction.
Investigations by Gokarella Police revealed that the attack stemmed from a personal dispute and was allegedly carried out by a group including the woman’s two sons. The suspects have fled the area, and investigations are underway to apprehend them.
Meanwhile, another incident that drew widespread attention involved a woman being assaulted and forcibly having her hair cut by a group at a shop in Ragama, after being accused of theft. Video footage circulating online shows the suspects ignoring the woman’s pleas.
Ragama Police said statements have been recorded from the victim, who was also referred to the Ragama Teaching Hospital for a medical examination.
Police confirmed that five suspects, including the main suspect, were arrested on April 17 in connection with the incident. The main suspect is a 27-year-old resident of Ragama, while the other suspects, aged between 20 and 23, are residents of Rajanganaya, Kadawatha, Ragama, Trincomalee and Chinawaraya.
Investigations into all three incidents are ongoing.
