Colombo, Jan. 09 (Daily Mirror)- Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake has been acquitted of charges connected to the Easter Sunday attack by a three-member bench appointed by the National Police Commission.
The National Police Commission officially communicated the acquittal to police headquarters in writing on December 14 last year. Copies of the related report were also forwarded to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security.
Senior DIG Nandana Munasinghe, in charge of the Western Province at the time, along with DIGs Deshabandu Tennakoon, Lalith Pathinayake who were in charge of the Colombo District, and Nilantha Jayawardena (former head of State Intelligence) faced charges for alleged failure to prevent the Easter attack.
While charge sheets were issued, transfers were made, and preliminary investigations initiated, the investigations were halted midway. However, the Presidential Commission appointed to investigate the Easter attack continued its proceedings, summoning these police officers to record their statements.
On April 24 of the previous year, the Presidential Commission once again accused Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake of negligence in preventing the Easter attack, prompting a three-member panel to conduct a fresh investigation.
Secretary of the National Police Commission, Thamara D Perera has said that a three-member bench comprising civil officials are conducting the investigations.
According to the relevant report, Senior DIG Lalith Pathinayake has been acquitted. He is currently serving as the Senior DIG in charge of Central Province.
She said that the committee will submit the report on other officers charged over the allegations once the investigations are completed.

Where do three civilian individuals can realistically get the COURAGE from , to convict three serving high powered policemen, not to mention one of them is the current head of the police ? So all three have to be acquitted.

When courts found Rajapakshas responsible for economic crisis , you guys appreciated the courts. In this case you are not satisfied, So, Courts have to give judgement based on your likes or dislikes, right?

It is only the Supreme Court that convicts culprits - commissions usually whitewash the wrongdoings as there are no prosecuters.

So the corrupt police used its own people to investigate themselves? So if I commit a crime my friends can do the investigations? And acquit me? Sri lanka is lost, r i p

He may have been acquitted by the corrupt justice system but not from the justice system of nature.

Police Commission cannot appoint a bench to hear and determine charges. To show that the Police Commission took action they appointed a Commission to look into it. This is all wrong. Police Commission should have requested the AG to charge all those who were held negligence. Why is the Police Commission misleading the public?

Only one of the three accused has been acquitted. What about the others? Found guilty? At the end no one will be held accountable. I still can’t believe how Sirisena got off the hook, being the commander in chief and holidaying in Singapore.

What else can one expect from a police commission set up by the Ranil Ryapaksa regime.

Only the courts can acquit suspects. How can a bench of civil officials declare acquittal like this? It's likely that other two police heads (DT and NJ) charged with negligence here will be acquitted soon this way bypassing the courts. What a country is this? Time has come to change this.

This is a clear sign that this fellow is going to be appointed the next IGP as Deshabandu Tennkone is not in hot waters.
