Popular actress Semini Iddamalgoda, who was arrested by the Welikada Police for failing to appear in court over matters related to the non-payment of Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contributions while operating a private security company was released on bail.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe granted bail to the suspect on a surety of Rs. 100,000.

Police informed the court that several arrest warrants had previously been issued against her in connection with the alleged withholding of EPF and other employee-related payments. Specifically, four warrants had been issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, two by the Matara Magistrate’s Court, and one by the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court.

Counsel appearing for the suspect told the court that she is a well-known public figure with no intention of evading legal proceedings. The court was also informed that in several of the cases, the outstanding payments had already been settled, resulting in the Labour Department withdrawing those particular matters.

The Magistrate ordered the recall of the warrants issued by the courts and directed that the relevant documentation be submitted by May 28.

In addition, the Magistrate instructed that a report detailing actions taken in connection with the warrants from the Colombo Magistrate’s Court be presented on May 19.

Abuse of power at every level of our society is prevalent, esp by the rich and the powerful. She wasn't arrested until after SEVEN warrants being issued on her! No accountability either on those who failed to carry out their duties, in this case, the police of Sri Lanka which is paid and maintained by people's money. While we can never expect fair and just governing by any of the other political parties, it is yet to see if the NPP government is genuinely interested in upholding the law of the land equally to all members of society.

Anyone who has to pay anything as a fine or payment has to pay that and agree on that but this matter is a different scenario as someone in our area too experienced a similar one. She definitely was not aware of these warrants as those warrants have being delivered to business address. Problem is with the labor department and legal system. It should update the process so that what ever the letter and summon is sent directly to the latest address of the accused. The summons delivery should be given to the nearest police station as they will do a better job than Piscals who seems to play a safe game by not delivering it most of the time. This can even happen to you or me or anyone as you will never know until you are arrested.

Well known public figure or not, if her Counsel now states those matters were settled, why did Semini or her Counsel report the matter to the police, instead of Semini evading and not presenting herself to the nearest police station and explaining her position.

Similar incident happened to a person in our area too. He was not aware of anything until he was taken by police few days prior to new year. Had to wait in police station till next day. Officers knew only it is an older case, amount and labor nothing else. He was not able to get any more information even after getting bail as courts were closed during that time. Case was taken on the first day the courts resumed after new year and he pleaded guilty and paid the small amount. He never got any summons similar to her case. Specially this kind of attitude from labor department and legal system will discourage both local and foreign businesses. If any payment has to be made, it is a must but proper process should be used to contact the accused. Why labor n legal departments did not trace the personnel address of accused using the election departments database and sent a letter by registered post. Current process waste public money and potentially damages reputation of people and time.
