The selling or displaying of non-standard plugs in shops and online shops is prohibited in the country, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) said.
While posting a notice on their official Facebook page, the PUCSL said selling, promoting, or displaying for sale plugs & sockets, power extension cords, and one to one conversion adaptors in shops or in online market stores in Sri Lanka is a punishable offence unless the said products or items bear the issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI).
Accordingly, 5A sockets with round holes, 5A plugs with round pins, adaptors without the SLS mark, substandard extension cords, and multi-plugs are prohibited.
Plugs, sockets, and adaptors should bear the SLS Product Certification Mark issued by the SLSI.
A gazette notification in this regard was issued on December 7, 2017 under the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
