Second attack was planned after Easter bombings – Police

The police today disclosed that the latest probes into the Easter Sunday attacks had revealed a second attack, which had been planned following the 2019 bombings on April 21st.

Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne addressing a special media briefing said at the Department of Government Information said according to probes, a second-tier team had been recruited and trained for another attack to follow the Easter attacks.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was investigating deep into the blasts had been able to thwart those plans through their intelligence network, he said.

Currently, 197 suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks and some suspects have established, led and funded organizations that misinterpreted Islam and spread extremist ideas among youth to create a second-tier team.

The suicide bombers who carried out the attack had also been directly involved in this process, SP Senaratne said.
