Colombo, Jan 4 (Daily Mirror) - Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando said yesterday that Lanka Sathosa aims to open five new mega stores and ten regular Lanka Sathosa stores, in the first quarter of 2024.
Addressing a media conference at the Presidential Media Center (PMC), he said that by year-end, the plan is to expand the Lanka Sathosa outlet network to 500 outlets.
"Expanding the network to 500 outlets serves the primary goal of enabling consumers to purchase goods at government-subsidized prices without shortages," he said.
In 2024, the goal is to increase the total income of Lanka Sathosa to nearly Rs. 70 billion, achieving an operating profit of nearly Rs. 1.5 billion. The company aims to secure a net profit of Rs. 500 million amidst the economic challenges.
A new programme for the Consumer Affairs Authority is anticipated in 2024, aiming to enhance consumer rights. The Department of Measurement Units, Standards, and Services will be fully computerized to meet people's needs in the first four months of the year," the Minister added.

Wasting money on megajokes. People have no money to buy things. Factories, businesses are closing and leaving the island to invest in Vietnam and other countries. This government only wants to stay in power and protect Rajapakses and their business cronies.

How are they going to stop shop lifting? CCT cameras at every Isle and retaining bags of all kinds at the entrance might be a good start. Checking every employee at start and finish should be mandatory. 1000s of retailers all over the world have had to close down due theft.

"Once bitten, twice shy," resonates the venerable adage. However, in the context of SATHOSA, the narrative transforms into "Many times bitten and many times shy." These unscrupulous politicians persistently endeavor to plunder using the SATHOSA brand. The government, oblivious to the plight of the people, zealously imposes exorbitant taxes, allowing the pilferage to persist through numerous channels. The term 'shameless' inadequately describes these individuals. Indeed, shame befalls the president for allowing such actions to persist.

Government should not do business as tax payers have to pay the losses. enough is enough

Sathosa is running at losses. Instead of closing down, why do they want to expand and enhance the losses, to plunder freely only.
