Sapugaskanda refinery to be closed from today

The Sapugaskanda oil refinery is to be closed from today as the crude oil shipment had to be delayed because there was no way of making a payment for it, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara said today.

"Order has been placed to get down three shipments of crude oil in the recent past and the government managed to make payments only for two of them. However, there funds are inadequate to pay for the third one. Therefore we have no option left, but to close the refinery temporarily," the Minister said.

Nevertheless, he assured that there won't be any shortage of fuel in the country, as there are adequate stocks in hand at the moment.

"So, there is no reason to panic," he said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Similarly we should get our creative, imaginative Mahanayakes and Theros to research into our scriptures to find a protection tax to impose on our minorities in the north and east for maintaining a 330000 army for their protection. This will free up money to import fuel for our electricity generation

How is the Sapugaskanda refinery being of any use to us? What does having it running provide as a benefit compared to having it not run? Why couldn't the payments for refined fuels be used to buy more dollars to pay for the third ship? There will be flood of dollars coming in within a week of free market for dollar peg cancelled. When will the end of the dollar peg happen?
