Sajith raises concerns over delay in appointing judges to SC, CA

Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today raised concerns about the government's failure to appoint four judges each to the Supreme Court (SC) and the Court of Appeal (CA), which had been vacant for more than six months.

He told Parliament that some career judges had retired due to the delay in filling the vacancies in the two courts.

Raising a question under Standing Order 27/2, he said it is not appropriate for a government which had come to power to make a system change to delay appointing the judges.

Responding to the question, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said appointing judges is something done by the President and that he will provide an answer after obtaining information from the Presidential Secretariat.

The Minister assured that judges will be appointed but he could not give a timeframe.
