Sajith questions restriction of local students to KDU Medical Faculty

Colombo, May 30 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today questioned the government's decision to restrict local students to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Medical Faculty and said it is a decision of small minded people.

"I am for free education. I am also for access to education for all. In a country where less than 25% of students gain acceptance into local universities, how can a government justify blocking others from pursuing private education? This is not equity, it’s exclusion, driven by small-minded thinking with no grasp of global realities," Premadasa said in his X message.

This is true. How can you deprive paying students from doing medicine in Sri Lanka. SAITM was closed down and KDU took over those students. So now why is KDU stopping med students???

IF IT IS FOR LACK OF CLASS ROOM SPACE, THEN THE DECISION MUST BE MADE TOENSASURE THAT THE INTAKE OF STUDENT ARE ON A % BASIS. LESS FORTUNATE MUST BE GIVEN A BIGGER %, AS FOR PRIVATE STUDENT, MOST GET QUALIFIED IN THE COUNTRY AND END UP APPLYING FOR OVERSEA EMPLOYMENT ONCE THEY QUALIFY AND ONLY HAVE TO DO AN ADDITIONAL EXAM IN THE COUNTRY THEY GO TO, AS MOST OVERSEAS DEVELOPED COUNTRIES FOLLOW THIS SYSTEM AND KNOW OF S FEW WHO HAVE GONE OVERSEAS, WORK UNDER EXPERIENCED DOCTOR AND OR SURGEONS STUDY AND COMPLETE THE EXAM REQUIRED. EVENTUALLY THEY APPLY FOR PR VISAS AND BECOME CITIZENS.

Yes, only foreign students and cadets from armed forces are allowed to enter KDU

If we allow more Sri Lankans to enter KDU , will they after passing out as doctors be in a position to help us eradicate Dengue ? The answer is Absolutely Not. Our politicians and policy makers can't think critically. Which is important, creating more and more doctors who have no Scientific Knowledge to deal with infections and medical problems or Creating genuine Scientists in Biology , Chemistry , and Physics ?

@ What you say is absolutely true . But we are a backward third world country as such no one in Sri Lanka would even understand your comment. Just like in India, we focus on producing more and more doctors and engineers. It will take another 100 years for Sri Lankans to realize that it is the proper Scientists that are needed to find the answers .

The initial issue was something else. KDU called for applications for courses including medicine. A quite a number applied and paid registration fees. Then comrade deputy minister made a statement in the parliament that KDU will not accept students for medicine. It is said that KDU website went blank indicating under construction and appeared two hours later without the opening for medicine. All applicants were informed that fees will be refunded. It is where the problem is. That is gross injustice to those who applied. They have gone to HR commission. People are being told half stories while the real story is held back. DM. please check before publishing and if true I as know it for certain please publish the comment.

Government should promote Private Universities in Sri Lanka, which will help local students and save forex for overseas studying. We can attract foreign students which can earn forex and stimulate local economy due to inflow of forex for their expenses. But should regulate it by government
