SPC’s contribution to government rises by 173 percent compared to 2024: Health Ministry

Colombo, Jan. 15 (Daily Mirror) - The State Pharmaceuticals Corporation of Sri Lanka (SPC) has contributed Rs. 1.118 billion to the government through income tax and treasury levies in 2025, which is an increase by 173 percent compared to 2024, the Health Ministry said.

The SPC also recorded a 26 percent increase in revenue from its Own Revenue Stream (ORS) and a 9 percent rise in income from its State Osusala Pharmacy network.

"For more than 53 years, the SPC has supplied quality-assured medicines to the country’s healthcare system at competitive, affordable prices. In 2025, the corporation achieved full utilisation of its annual budget allocation for DHS supplies, through the issue of indent orders for the first time in its history.

ORS production also grew by 36 percent year-on-year.

Income from State Osusala pharmacies increased partly due to the opening of five new branches in Kiribathgoda, Narahenpita, Kegalle, Kalmunai and Batticaloa, alongside improved operational efficiency that helped many outlets return to profitability," the Ministry said.

"To strengthen drug quality and safety standards, the SPC has initiated the ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation process. As part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, the corporation has also expanded health camps and public awareness programmes to promote rational medicine use and better health practices across the country.

As a major importer and supplier of pharmaceuticals, surgical consumables, laboratory chemicals and equipment, the SPC remains a key partner to all institutions under the Ministry of Health. It also oversees the nationwide State Osusala network, ensuring public access to essential medicines.

All medicines issued through the Osusala network undergo rigorous four-stage quality testing at the SPC’s state-of-the-art laboratories before being released to the market, guaranteeing the highest levels of safety and efficacy, a statement issued by the Ministry said.
