Colombo, March 28 (Daily Mirror) - A new “SMART Railway Service” is set to be introduced to modernise Sri Lanka’s railway ticketing system, with a pilot programme scheduled to begin in early April.
The initiative, developed under the CSRP project, aims to strengthen and streamline the existing online train ticketing facility by introducing a new digital ticketing system along with equipment to verify tickets at railway stations, replacing the current manual ticketing process.
The pilot project will be launched at several stations along the Kelani Valley line, including Narahenpita Railway Station, Nugegoda Railway Station, Makumbura Railway Station, Homagama Railway Station and Padukka Railway Station.
Authorities expect to identify and address any operational or technical issues during the pilot phase before expanding the system across all stations on the Kelani Valley line. The programme will subsequently be extended to railway stations on other lines.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena visited the Narahenpita Railway Station yesterday (27) to review preparations, including technical proposals and implementation plans for the project.
The SMART Railway Service is expected to enhance efficiency, reduce ticketing congestion, and improve overall passenger convenience once fully implemented.
