Colombo, July 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) yesterday gave an undertaking before the Supreme Court that it would take necessary steps to prevent illegal tourist guiding and implement the relevant legal provisions under the Tourism Act.
Deputy Solicitor General Dr. Awanthi Perera, appearing on behalf of the SLTDA, made these remarks when a Fundamental Rights petition filed by the Sri Lanka Institute of National Tourist Guide Lecturers was taken up before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices S. Thurairaja, Mahinda Samayawardhena and Menaka Wijesundera.
Dr. Perera further informed the Court that a separate investigation team would be deployed to crackdown on illegal tourist guiding and related unlawful activities.
In its petition, the Institute is seeking an order directing the authorities to take immediate action to prevent illegal tourist guiding and to enforce the legal provisions of the Tourism Act No. 38 of 2005 to curb such activities.
Senior Counsel Ravindranath Dabare appeared for the petitioners.
