SLC responds to Opposition Leader’s allegations over ICC reporting

COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today refuted the recent allegations by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in Parliament regarding the communications between SLC and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Opposition Leader yesterday revealed that SLC president Shammi Silva had sent a letter to the ICC alleging that the Sports Ministry had made undue interferences in its activities and claimed that this had paved the way for the ICC ban on Sri Lanka Cricket.

Responding to the claim, SLC issued a statement stating that the suspension of SLC occurred due to continuous interference by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, despite numerous warnings.

"This interference resulted in SLC's inability to adhere to article 2.4D, leading to a violation of the said article. It is evident that the suspension was not a consequence of misquoted or misunderstood communication by SLC, as claimed by the Leader of SJB in Parliament," SLC said.

SLC further said most may not fully comprehend the intricacies of how sports associations affiliated with international bodies, such as the ICC, operate. "We sincerely request anyone critical of SLC to diligently and intelligently consider the facts before disseminating baseless accusations and statements lacking merit," SLC added.

It would be worth finding out how other member countries of the ICC operate. The rule must be the same to all members. SLC as a sport’s inspiration of Sri Lanka cannot be totally independent of the government, there has to be some oversight in place. The other day at the kola kandha place, I heard this comment “ even if president RW contests for the post of chairman of SLC, he will lose to SS”

Agree, no sport's body should be totally independent of government, even if that's what ICC or Olympic Committee or any other world body desires. In any country the government should reign supreme however much it's corrupted. If not who would have the power to order any investigation when there are suspicions of corruption or malpractices?

Ranil understood who was the real puppet master behind the scene to get Sri Lankan cricket suspended. So he telephoned the puppeteer asking for help. If Sri Lanka was a powerful country then Ranil would have threatened the puppeteer with terrible consequences but all what Ranil was able to do was to plead with the puppeteer to untangle the puppet strings and extricate Sri Lankan cricket. But he asked for “ high price”, like Trincomale.

This Puppeteer instead of speaking on Budget 2024 in Parliament, had wasted valuable time on Budget debate focusing only on SLC due to personal Political vendetta having to RW. Obviously he is lacking knowledge to financial matters tospeak on. Maybe Rohan here is mouth piece and in SJB . Been very much conversant in ENGLISH, has doubts the writer is the Puppeteer himself.

Putting aside who is right and who is wrong here, it must be said that BCCI now is ICC and they dictate the terms. Look at Indian players who never go to overseas leagues, but they want overseas players to come IPL. How is that fair? Equally, SL cricket of course must be accountable to SL first. ICC also has double standards. How come Afganistan is not banned for Thaleban not allowing women to play cricket? Tell me if that's not politican interference. But, watch Olympics Committee won't allow Afganistan to play at Olympics.

Sri Lanka were all out twice for 50s against India while Australia beat India in the final of the ODI World Cup by 6 wickets. What is the difference between Sri Lanka and Australia? Reason No 1. SLC is a highly corrupt and inept organization while the Australian Cricket Board is not corrupt. Reason No 2. There are 26 First Division Teams in Sri Lanka and Australia has only 6 Teams.

SLC must be a voluntary organization made-up of cricket fans and business and social leaders. A non-profit organization to promote and facilitate the sport. The present from the start of the 'umathipala Regime' have been parasites living off the avails of our cricketing talent. If there is a Ministry of Sport, as done bone the present Minister, there should not be any debate about it. I have watched and witnessed the FIFA drama and the various match fixing dramas of the ICC members. Enough is enough.
