Sri Lanka has been unable to secure Covid-19 vaccines for rollout according to the original time- bound plan because of the failure on the part of Serum Institute of India to deliver the committed stocks of doses, a Minister said.
The inability to deliver the agreement amount is attributed to the emergency Covid-19 crisis in India.
Sri Lanka planned to purchase as many as 10 million doses this year for mass rollout, but only 500,000 doses were delivered.
India also donated 500,000 doses of Covishield vaccine under its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.
State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana told Daily Mirror that the Serum Institute of India committed to supply 500,000 doses of its AstraZeneca Covishield vaccines on February 21, and similar consignments respectively on March 21 and April 21.
Besides, the Minister said it had committed to deliver 3.5 million jabs in the third quarter of this year and another five million in the last quarter.
“We counted on India as the main vaccine supplier for Sri Lanka. We had signed agreements to procure ten million doses. But only, 500, 000 jabs were delivered on time. It means it is only five percent of the committed amount. We fully understand the worsening Covid-19 situation in India,” he said.
Asked about cooperation with other vaccine producers, he said a dispatch of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine would be sent next Tuesday. Besides, he said China had confirmed the delivery of another consignment, but the date had not yet been confirmed.
“We heard of the confirmation from Beijing. But, the date is yet to be confirmed,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Why aren’t we in Lanka which is a province of China not receiving sufficient quantities from the central government in Beijing to vaccinate all of us loyal and patriotic Chinese citizens in Lanka

Ok so now blame India.
The rural folk of our country are so naive they believe everything the government information department puts out.

CNN reported that the rich from South America are flocking to the US for the vaccine. That is how vaccination programs need to be organised.

When someone gives100 products to distribute to 50 people. You were supposed to give it for 50 not 85. Basic maths Pavithra.

You can’t put the blame on to someone else for your own shortfall Mr. Minister. You lot have turned out to be total imbeciles. Now best thing to do it shut your mouth and resign. This crisis is not something that you can get away with your usual drama and jokes. This will bite you in your back. Shame on you all

India is not the be blamed. You exhausted the first consignment by giving one dose. The donation was for 2 doses per person. Only an inefficient store keeper will do this. Its like serving rice only and waiting for the curry to come in the next ship

You do have to blame India. They not only messed us, they Infact messed the WHO covax vaccines production too. Never trust Serum institute or India again. If we had made the purchase from Russia it would have been delivered by now. Only solution is to make it in Sri Lanka, like UAE does. They got China to put a facility in UAE.
USA is all talk and no action. They have stockpiled 1.2 billion doses of different covid 19 vaccines. Of that close to 80 million is Astra Zenca that is not approved to be used in USA. They have not given any to any other country also, they stopped supplying raw materials to other countries to produce vaccine. USA is causing a covid vaccine shortage in the world
I guess USA will give the vaccines only if you agree to their backroom deals. If not for China some countries in Africa would not have had any vaccines.
We need to be like Cuba, strong bio technology industry and already 5 Covid 19 vaccine candidates. Two of them phase 3 trials and no side effects.

There is a glut of vaccines in the USA. Some states are offering a lottery prize of a million dollars to be drawn once a week for the next five weeks, to encourage people to get the vaccine. The mutt diplomats should be talking to the US state department to curry favor to Obtain vaccines for SL. The embassy of SL in DC is a joke. Just call and see how the staff answers calls. US is producing 400 million doses a month in the US.
