Sri Lanka is among the South Asian countries gearing up for elections at different levels in 2024, alongside India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Maldives, the UK government said.

In response to a written question in UK Parliament about the South Asian countries elections, Anne-Marie Trevelyan Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) stated that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives are all expected to hold elections at different levels in 2024.

“The UK believes transparent, democratic governance is in the interests of all people and the long-term stability of every nation. We raise the importance of free and fair elections in our discussions with South Asian governments, and with opposition parties and others,” the Minister of State stated.

“We press for an end to harassment and intimidation of civil society, media and opposition parties. Ministers and HMG officials visiting the region, regularly convey that respect for the rule of law and access to justice are essential in open democracies,” she added.

Parliament must adopt a policy decision sooner than later to hold both presidential and parliament elections on a single day and save nearly 1billion SLR .

The U.K. Government may have announced that most of the countries in South East Asia are gearing up for elections in 2024. However, the U.K. Government must know that in Sri Lanka, the Government led by the current President is suffering from 'Electionphobia' and it is unlikely that an Election will be held.

This Sri Lankan present President does not have a Mandate to sit in that chair. There is no Democratic Government in Sri Lanka. Other countries must not recognise him as the President of Sri Lanka.

The appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as acting IGP makes holding the Presidential Election more likely. That is because DT will do anything the President asks him to do even if it is illegal or wrong.

@ Ram Voter not looking forward... Both are ignorant of first order as the Constitution guarantee that Presidential and General Election cannot be postponed indefinitely. It needs two third pass at Parliament and Passed by people through Referendum. Presidents Chandrika, Mahinda, Maithri were trying to extend their periods were dismissed by Supreme Court Judgements. All democratic countries mentioned held Elections regularly. Your comments are biased against with ulterior political agenda . Nothing else but a mafia. .

The people in Sri Lanka know Ranil Wickremesigne and his basic character very well because they have been able to get an idea of his changing positions, attitudes and behavior over decades! He is a trickster, deceiver, opportunist and slip of the tongue, depending on the political facts and situation! You can't trust him, he stands for frequent word breaks! For this reason, and because of his autocratic traits, he is rejected by the majority of people! If he doesn't want to lose the last bit of political credibility and his face completely, he should stick to his promised word and let the free elections, which are important at this point in time and which the still very suffering people are demanding, be held! Although he cannot escape defeat, he may gain human respect and recognition!

Gearing up all right! But SL’s problem is that the clutches of all parties keeps slipping.

Had respect for the rule of law and access to justice, the essential parts of open democracies, the People's President His Excellency Goyatabaya Rajapaksa mandated by the very people could not have been ousted and/or overthrown by merely an American Conspiracy

@ Volker Metzger...definitely you're not from Democratic European Country or from West. All these Democratic countries uphold elections and listen to voice of people for the right to vote as per Constitution. Are you ignoring the fact that Constitution in Sri Lanka ,is well guaranteed to hold by the Supreme Court and Courts in Sri Lanka. Give an instant in Democratic history of our country where general or presidential election had been postponed indefinitely. Our country and India had elections all the time. May be not in yours with Politburo complex .Sri Lanka People changed to hand over the power to rule to Democratic parties from 1948 to 2021 whether Parliamentary or Presidency . It appears you're a manipulator who hood winking the locals in the pretext that you are foreigner . Get lost Volker... you foreigner.....well oiled palm? no one among our local journalists will stoop to low levels like you. Can't understand why been tolerated by Publisher
