Colombo, Jan. 11 (Daily Mirror) - Sports Minister Harin Fernando said that he has formally requested the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah to consider hosting a few Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in Sri Lanka.

The IPL 2024 schedule has garnered attention due to its clash with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections later this year in India.

"I recently had a sudden meeting with BCCI Secretary Jay Shaha, during which we discussed potential diplomatic concerns. I proposed the idea of hosting three matches of the upcoming IPL tournament in Sri Lanka. The response I received was quite reasonable. It would be a significant win for us to secure the opportunity to host these matches in Sri Lanka," the Minister said.

He said given that the elections are scheduled to take place in South India during the same period, Sri Lanka sees this as an opportunity to turn Mattala into an IPL Zone and attract tourists.

It is an excellent idea, hope we can persuade the Indians to agree to this proposal. Also we should avoid leveling unsubstantiated allegations again top Indian BCCI officials as happened recently. We have much to gain financially and some positive energy amidst the overall gloom.

Tough to imagine BCCI will forego so much revenue by shifting venues here when any IPL match in India attracts full houses of 50000 and here only 20000 max. Also advertisers who pay for TV rights will not like to drop their audiences with such a target audience in India.

POLITICIAN INTERFERING WITH CRICKET IS CALLED POLITICAL INTERFERENCE, IS THAT NOT RIGHT HARIN? Since you became the minister that is all what we have seen. P.S I reckon that you should punish Shammi and his gang for bringing disrepute to Cricket and Sri Lanka by requesting ICC to ban Sri Lanka's membersip. That is a despicable act.
