Colombo, August 4 (Daily Mirror) - The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to vote in favour of the resolution to remove IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon from the post, Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Katunathilleke said.
He told the Daily Mirror that the SJB Parliamentary Group has decided to vote in favour of the resolution.
“We are the ones who opposed the appointment of Tennakoon as the IGP and we went to courts against his appointment. Therefore, we decided that it is fitting that we vote in favour of this resolution," he added.
SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said the party has not taken an official stand.
“Our parliamentary group will decide on it at the right time,” he said.
The resolution to remove Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon from office in terms of Section 17 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, will be taken up for debate in Parliament tomorrow.
Parliament on 08 April, 2025 passed the Resolution No. P.29/2025 and it appeared in the Order Paper of Parliament dated 08.04.2025 and a Committee of Inquiry (hereinafter referred to as the 'Committee') was appointed under Section 5(2) and Section 6(b) of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, to inquire and report its findings in respect of the allegations in the said resolution. The committee apparently found Tennakoon guilty of the charges.
Tennakoon will be the first IGP to be removed from office through a resolution in Parliament.
