SJB to launch street protests to force Govt. to go for general election

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) today said it would launch street protests to force the government to conduct a general election.

SJB MP Mujibur Rahman told a press conference that his party is in the process of organizing street protests to force the government to go a general election.

“Parliament does not reflect the will of the people today, as more than 40 MPs from the ruling SLPP have crossed over to the opposition while four SJB MPs have crossed over to the opposition and are enjoying ministerial portfolios. Therefore people should be allowed to exercise their franchise and elect a new Parliament,” Mr. Rahman said.

Asked whether the protests would be of the Aragalaya type, the MP said SJB would engage in peaceful protests.

Referring to the reforms to Local Government Election Act, Mr, Rahman said the real objective of the proposed reforms could be to postpone the election, “We don’t oppose the reforms proposed by the President, but these reforms should be implemented in due course,” he said.

Referring to the behaviour of the police during the recent protest, Mr. Rahman said the police is being controlled by an invisible hand. (Yohan Perera)
