SJB adopts wait and see policy on domestic debt restructuring programme

The main opposition in Parliament, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to adopt a wait-and-see policy and then decide on its stance on the domestic debt restructuring programme, several MPs said.

SJB MP Eran Wickramaratne said the party cannot take a decision on the matter till the government comes out with its plans regarding the debt restructuring.

“What we are concerned about is the fate of the depositors and what would become of the EPF. We cannot make a decision as we are being kept in the dark,” he told the Daily Mirror.

MP Gayantha Karunatilaka said the party’s parliamentary group has decided to wait and see what the Cabinet decides with regard to the domestic debt restructuring and would make the final decision during the weekend after looking at the government proposal.

Meanwhile, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said there is no necessity for Parliamentary approval for the domestic debt destructing process.

“There is no necessity for the domestic debt restructuring process but the government should let the Opposition know its plans since the government is seeking House approval,” he said.(Yohan Perera)
