Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition MP Sujith Sanjaya Perera today proposed the government to offer at least Rs. 500 or Rs. 1,000 in cash to people who capture toque monkeys as a solution to the crop damage caused by animals.

SJB MP Perera told Parliament that it is not a big issue to spend some money for this when considering the cost of the damage caused by the animals.

The MP said some experts from the Peradeniya University proposed in 2015 to the then government to sterilise monkeys or confine toque monkeys in a suitable place and added that the proposals were not implemented due to high costs.

He said if the present government can find a lasting solution to the issue, no issue of high costs.

"If the government can offer at least Rs. 500 or Rs. 1000 in cash to people who capture toque monkeys and initiate programme to cage them, it will be better despite high cost rather than surveys. There is no other solution to the issue," he said.
