SC determines SJB’s 21A requires approval through referendum: Speaker informs Parliament

The Supreme Court has determined that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution tabled by Samagi Jana Balawegaya required approval through a referendum and a two-thirds majority in Parliament, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhane announced today.

Several people had filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging the 21st Amendment to Constitution moved by SJB MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara in Parliament. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Srilanka cannot move forward with the existing constitution. Mad Puthano and his SJB cronies should realise that putting patch work to the existing constitution will not solve the country's problems. A new constitution with Parliamentarians accountable to the electorate is a must. Also the present 225 should be written off and not permitted to contest again.

Good and well expected news Gota and Rajapakshas. A Referendum at a time like this will cost time and money for the people who are facing UNBEARABLE costs to make their daily living needs. Gota has to see many more deaths and hardships of the people to remain in power. It's just a past time for our President.
