The Russian Embassy in Colombo expressed serious concern over the recent controversial night party planned in Unawatuna on February 24, 2024, which was subsequently called off following public outcry.
In a statement, the Embassy said the event, which was organized by entrepreneurs in Unawatuna, was to be held with a "dress-code: white."
“While unconfirmed reports suggest that the main promoter and the owners of the bar agreeing to host the party are Russian citizens, it is essential to clarify that the event's cancellation was due to the ambiguous conditions of entry and the resulting confusion among the public,” it stated.
“The organizers have presented their apologies, acknowledging that there was no intention to cause harm or offense to anyone,” the statement added.
The Russian Embassy underscored Russia's firm condemnation of all forms of racial discrimination and nationalism. The Embassy reaffirms its commitment to combatting such atrocities.
In light of recent events, the Embassy emphasized the ongoing Special Military Operation conducted by the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine, aimed at eradicating manifestations of racial discrimination and nationalism.
Furthermore, the Embassy urges all Russian citizens visiting or residing on the island to adhere strictly to Sri Lankan laws and respect local customs.
The controversial 'white only' themed party scheduled to take place on February 24 at a Russian-run cafe in the south was cancelled by its organizers following widespread public backlash.
The event, which was promoted as an 'Opening White Party,' stirred significant controversy due to its discriminatory nature. Organizers intended to implement a face control policy where entry would be restricted solely to individuals deemed fitting by bouncers based on their white skin, wealth, style or demeanor.

There has to be a line drawn at some point regarding some matters. Otherwise, taking your example, a person will ask why there is a system called Visa, and why people need a passport to travel. You'd say everybody is a human and humans should be free to travel anywhere without any rules.

How many hotels down south only take in foreigners? I'm British sri lankan and I was denied rooms just based on the fact that I am sri lankan, even when getting my license I turned up in long shorts, I didn't know there was a dress code to enter werahera center, but foreigners were in there with shorts smoking cigs, why is there such a difference of treatment between sri lankans and foreigners? If we went to their countries do people think we are treated the same? Our own people discriminate against sri lankans, I have not tried to get a hotel room down south since that event, I was laughing when corona hit and those businesses suffered, one manager when I inquired about a room in just said go straight and keep walking, pointing to a dead end at the end of the road, racism against sri lankans needs to be punished all businesses and leisure centers, hotels etc should be available to all decent sri lankans, this is our country but we are treated like second class citizens.

@ GT. To some extent I understand guesthouses that don't accept locals. Have you ever seen the difference between the rooms of foreigners and locals after departure? Have you ever tried to get compensation from locals if they destroyed something? This also happens to foreigners, but they pay for the damage without comment. How can we solve such problems without being seen as racist? We do in this way: Locals and all nationalities are welcome in my company’s restaurants. However, our guesthouses are only offered on foreign platforms or rented to local friends and acquaintances, or someone unknown to us needs a well known guarantor.

Sometimes mischief makers create things to see that there is a public outcry especially in Sri Lanka which comprises of black and dark complexioned people. This party is for "Whites ONLy" the dress code is "White ONLY" this could be a misnormer. Always instead of coming to a conclusion it is better to read the terms and conditions to ensure that it does not lead to Racial Segregation!!!!!!!

Its not just about Russians. Some 5 stars hotels only accept indian tourists and even bar sri lankan citizens from entering the night clubs operating in premise. This goes unreported. The logic for this shameful behaviour being a table full of Indian spend more than citizens.
