Colombo, Feb 27 (Daily Mirror) - The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today that Rs. 245 million has been paid to the victims from the funds recovered, as ordered by the Supreme Court judgment, in connection with the fundamental rights petitions filed over the failure to prevent the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

Additional Solicitor General Viveka Siriwardena, appearing for the Attorney General, informed the Supreme Court that, as per the Supreme Court judgment, the respondents have paid a total of Rs. 311 million to the Office for Reparations.

She further stated that out of the Rs. 311 million paid to the Office for Reparations, Rs. 245 million has been distributed among 412 victims as of January 31 this year.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Murdu Fernando, Justice S. Thurairaja, and Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz, fixed the petitions for May 21 to review the progress of the compensation payments.

The people wasting and stealing public money in trillions of rupees led to this people's uprising. Every house that was damaged were at least partly built by looted national wealth. When unarmed protesters were attacked by government thugs, the average guys were enraged, but some opportunist individuals too started fishing in the muddied water. However, when the ball started rolling, no one can predict which way it would be going, leaving what in its wake.

Government must investigate and recover the sums paid as compensation as those who got paid should have claimed from insurance companies. Why give a special treatment to politicians when a civilian will not be paid. Further, investigation should be conducted to see if those who got paid by the Govt also claimed from Insurance by double dipping.
