Colombo, March 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation has revealed that Rs. 2.4 million has been spent on printing documents related to the upcoming census of wild animals that damage agricultural crops.
According to a statement from the Ministry, a total of Rs. 2,478,000, including VAT, was spent on printing the census papers. The printing work was carried out by the Government Printing Department, with each census paper costing approximately 30 cents. The Ministry has also instructed the Government Printing Department to produce about 7 million such documents for the census.
The planned animal census, scheduled for March 15, is a historic first in Sri Lanka and is designed to count the wild animals that cause damage to crops, including giant squirrels, peacocks, macaques, and monkeys. The census will be conducted between 8:00 and 8:05 am, with officials given a strict five-minute window to complete the task.
The government earlier said that the census is part of a broader initiative led by a special committee tasked with addressing agricultural losses caused by wild animals and recommending measures for better management of the issue. Farmers and villagers have been urged to cooperate during the event to ensure its success.
