Roses see weak demand as prices bite

Florists along Ven. Baddegama Wimalawansa Mawatha in Town Hall, Colombo said Valentine’s Day flower sales have dropped this year compared to previous years, mainly due to high prices and low consumer spending.

Several florists told Mirror Business that fewer customers are buying roses for Valentine’s Day, as many people are cutting back on non-essential spending because of economic difficulties.

Traders said January and December recorded better sales than February, which is usually a strong month for the flower trade.

Florists said prices have increased mainly due to import taxes and higher costs. On normal days, a single wrapped red rose costs around Rs.350, while Valentine’s Day prices are slightly higher. A bouquet of red roses is priced between Rs.2500 and Rs.3000, depending on the number of flowers and added decorations.

To attract customers, some florists have offered special discounts and promotions. However, traders said many customers visit shops only to check prices and leave without making a purchase.

Supply shortages have also affected prices. Due to lower flower harvests in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla, florists have had to import flowers, mainly from India. Traders are now calling on the government to reduce import taxes on flowers to help lower prices.

Some customers said flower prices are higher than on normal days and that most shops are selling mainly roses, with few other flower varieties available.

Florists said the lowest price for a fresh red rose in February 2025 is about Rs.200, while a wrapped rose costs around Rs.250. Large bouquets range from Rs.8000 to Rs.12000, with some premium bouquets priced at around Rs.10500.

Compared to previous years, prices have eased. In 2024, a single red rose cost around Rs.300, down from Rs.600 in 2023. A bouquet of red roses in 2024 cost about Rs.6000.

Meanwhile, large online florists continue to target high-end customers. Lassana Flora’s Valentine’s Day collection includes themed bouquets and gift packs. According to its website, the ‘Grand Valentine Giant’ bouquet is priced at Rs.75650, while a bouquet of 100 red roses costs Rs.51250. A single rose is priced at Rs.950.

Kapruka also offers a wide range of Valentine’s Day gifts, including rose bouquets, chocolate and cake combos, and soft toys, with island-wide delivery. A bouquet of 120 red roses is currently priced at Rs.58320 under a discount offer.

Despite these options, florists say overall Valentine’s Day demand remains weak, reflecting cautious consumer spending.
