Roaming leopards instill fear among Hatton residents

Leopards which are roaming freely in the Ruwanpura and Kudagama areas near Hatton, instilling fear among the people living in those areas.

The people in these villeges claim that leopards often stray into their areas and that they are gripped with fear of being attacked and could even fall prey to the predators.

People say that leopards are freely roaming in their neighbourhood during night and they are scared to come out of the houses for any urgent needs.

Several pets, dogs and chicken have disappeared, and it is suspected that these would have been hunted down by these mountain leopards. (Hatton - H.M. Hewa)

This is so badly worded. It's this type of provocative reporting that empowers villagers to poach and pressures ministers into quick fix hunting solutions. Please report more on the loss of habitat and that villagers are encroaching into buffer zones.

Just as it is happening to the elephants, the only reason for such encroachments by the wild is because the humans have encroached into the natural habitat of the wild creatures. What are they supposed to do? There should be clearly demarcated boundaries for the wild life and breaking of which should warrant automatic legal action.

For the safety of both parties the creatures must be translocated to a safe place, without delay. Till then those must be shielded as it is a tourist attraction. In fact, creatures, too got the right to live. So, people must be indoors, at night until safe enough.

This didn't happen overnight. It is nearly always human encroachment into the habits of the animals which brings this about. That said our people must have solutions to live safely and earn a living where they are, without making animals extinct. In time there will be less space for animals, so perhaps a referendum should be put on how things should happen. Kill all the animals, or push the people back out away from lands they've encroached on over the last 50 years? I don't which will be stronger numbers the big city large animal liking crowds versus the many many small village people who suffer from them?
