Colombo, Sept. 3 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka is witnessing a continued increase in HIV cases, with the latest figures showing a dramatic rise compared to previous years, latest data reveal.
According to the National STD/AIDS Control Programme, a total of 230 cases have been recorded in the first quarter alone (January to March) in 2025.
The first quarter marks the highest number of cases reported in a single quarter since 2009.
Of the cases reported in the first quarter of 2025, 30 males and two females fall within the age range of 15–24, while the remaining cases are individuals above 25 years old.
The male-to-female ratio of reported HIV cases in 2025 stands at 6.6:1.
Furthermore, 2025 has so far reported 10 deaths related to HIV/AIDS
In 2024, a total of 47 individuals succumbed to HIV/AIDS, while Sri Lanka conducted over one million HIV tests during the last year alone.
Meanwhile, given the rising number of HIV cases, the Ministry of Health’s National STD/AIDS Control Programme recently recommended integrating HIV/STI prevention measures—including condom use, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)—into Sri Lanka’s school curriculum.
However, the proposal is still under review.
