Rise in antibiotic use limits discoveries, warns Health Secretary

Colombo, Sept. 25 (Daily Mirror) - The discovery of new antibiotics has become increasingly rare due to their widespread use in humans, animals, foods and soil—a trend that poses a serious concern for the country, Health and Mass Media Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

He cautioned that the misuse of antibiotics has significantly contributed to the rise of antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Jasinghe made these remarks at a media briefing on the 78th World Health Assembly, held today at the Government Information Department Auditorium.

The Southern and Eastern Regional Sessions of the 78th World Health Assembly will be held in Sri Lanka from October 13–15, with representatives from nine countries expected to participate. The theme of this year’s summit, ‘Healthy Aging and Primary Health Care,’ was proposed by Sri Lanka.

He added that Sri Lanka has long prioritised primary healthcare—an effort that has intensified under the current government and has now gained international recognition.

Dr. Jasinghe further noted that the government is preparing to reduce construction costs for multi-storied buildings in the health sector.

“What is needed now is to change the health system, and for that, financing is the key,” he said.

“The Ministry of Health has no intention of constructing large numbers of massive buildings. For instance, the planned 10–15 storied buildings are being reduced in scale. The money spent on such projects can instead be directed to primary healthcare. Only then can rural health services be strengthened. If primary healthcare is done properly, we can gain optimal service from five-storied buildings instead of ten- storied ones,” Dr. Jasinghe added.
