Colombo, Feb 10 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday urged the government to reduce the electricity tariff by a considerable amount after analysing the data of the Verité Research and Committee on Public Finance on electricity tariff, which is said to be higher in South Asia.
The Opposition Leader told parliament that, according to the data on the surveys, Sri Lankans pay approximately 2.5 to 3 times more for electricity compared to their counterparts in other South Asian nations.
He said the government increased electricity tariffs on several occasions in the recent past and that it had negatively affected consumers, the public, industrial sector and business sector.
“We heard that the government is planning to reduce electricity tariff by 4 per cent. It is not at all sufficient. We urge the government to reduce the electricity tariff by a considerable amount,” he said.

Another vague statement by Mr. here nor there. Btw has your wife paid the 2 year rental errear on her business premises?

There are good reasons why Sri Lankans pay approximately 2.5 to 3 times more for electricity compared to their counterparts in other South Asian nations. If he cannot understand the reasons why, he must surely be an idiot. No wonder he is not providing active support towards accelerating mega renewable energy projects in the country. What a moron!

Initiate Solar Panel Installation Saturday, 10 February 2024 09:49 AM
Good you are initiating reduction in tariffs. Why not your party form up a collective to support installing solar panels for the needy
Mass Production Using SJB’s Connections Saturday, 10 February 2024 11:57 AM
Also give discounted rates to those middle income families. Use your business connections to mass produce these panels to justify the cost. Your party will definitely score points for the next elections :)

Government revenue have shrunk enormously therefore, they've to charge higher electricity charges!! Moreover, gov't need the next IMF tranche. Yeah.

The bottom line is that the CEB cannot be subsidized by government revenue (taxes and levies). The CEB needs to price themselves to be self-sustainable. The CEB also has a pile of debt accumulated over the years that has to be paid back especially to the two state banks. For that they need to generate sufficient cash flow over and above the basic operational cash needs. Once that debt is gradually paid down the interest cost of operating the CEB would reduce proportionately and flow through and be reflected in future pricing.

any other request your Highness? And how exactly do you propose to do it? Reduction in traffic cannot be based on just comparison to other countries. How much does it cost to produce electricity those countries. Do politicians in those countries not pay their bills like in SL politicians

This is possible at least by 25% considering the availability of hydro during heavy rainy season last quarter or so. People are overloaded and all sustainability, national security and progression of everything depend on the fact that only if working people can afford for their basic needs. But the agenda is opposite so the maste plan hidden meant to save only those who got the ability to live somehow(bribes, commission, theft) not just survive with a legitimate job wage.

Dimantha ,the question is will they reduce the rates when debt burden reduces. In Sri Lanka they don't follow the theory 'what goes up must come down' ,it only goes up further.

You should find parallel trustworthy promises to each of NPP’s brave, vote catching promises, for example, such as scrapping all perks including pension, vehicles, bangalows for parliamentarians out of tax payers money, you should not second to them
AJ Sunday, 11 February 2024 07:47 AM
This promise alone catches all the floating votes, our public seriously believing parliamentarians not developed the country but guise of developing they looted, their success in wealth and state of bankruptcy proving it, taxpayers need not to bear the brunt of such unnecessary burden, politicians come out with workable scheme and catch floating votes
