Red alert warning issued for lightning in 18 districts



Colombo, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - A severe lightning warning has been issued today for eighteen districts, the Meteorology Department said.

They said that a high-level red alert has been issued for the following districts: Mannar, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Matale, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kandy, Kegalle, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara, Moneragala, Colombo and Gampaha.

A moderate-level lightning warning has been issued for the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota.

The public is strongly advised to seek shelter in safe places, to avoid taking cover under trees and refrain from using wired telephones connected to electricity during thundershowers.

The public is also requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
