Red alert for 13 districts on severe lightning: Met Dept.

A Red alert on thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning has been issued for 13 districts, the Department of Meteorology said today.

Accordingly, thundershowers accompanied by lightning are likely to occur at several places in Uva, Eastern, Northern and North-Central provinces and in Kurunegala district.

Heavy showers of above 75 mm can be expected in some places in these areas.

Therefore, the general public is cautioned to take necessary precautions to safeguard themselves against the squall and lightning, the department said.

Accordingly, the 13 districts which are named as follows: Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Matale, Batticaloa, Ampara and Moneragala they said.

The Meteorology Department cautioned people not to seek shelter under trees but to stay indoors. (Chaturanga Samarawickama)
