Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development is preparing to award the largest lottery prize in its history, with a winning cheque exceeding Rs. 620 million.

The record-setting jackpot of Rs. 629,855,919.60, drawn in the Jayamalle Kapruka Lottery on February 19, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the country’s lottery history.

The official cheque presentation ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Development Lottery Board Auditorium. The event will take place under the patronage of Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.

Authorities say the prize represents the highest-ever lottery payout in the country, reflecting growing public interest in lottery games and the increasing scale of prize offerings in the sector.

YES - YES ! Growing public interest in lottery games will bring the needed prosperity to the island nation ! It will also pay our capital payments to our lendrs by 2028. What does the NPP Clan knows about growing an economy. We need people of calibre of Dr N M Perera, Lalith Athulathmudali etc to give tuition to AKD, Harini, Tilvin 159 kids !

Offering a colossal amount such as this to an individual is not a prudent act. If such an amount is provided to an individual without any commercial background it would not be utilized according to a plan. Therefore it should be guided under an authority for a feasible investment with constant supervision.
