’Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund’ receives over Rs. 697 million so far

Colombo, Dec. 4 (Daily Mirror)- The 'Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund' has received more than Rs. 697 million as donations so far, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Harshana Suriyapperuma said today.

He said Rs. 635 million have been received through the Bank of Ceylon account and more than Rs. 61 million through the Central Bank accounts.

Suriyapperuma said the amount has been received from 30,470 contributions of different deposits and contributors from more than 33 countries.

At least we can be sure all of the money will be utilised for the people. Sometimes maybe slow but for sure for the people. That trust this government has kept it high.

Obviously people are disturbed and sad for the devastating effect on people and the economy. But however it does not justify to create funds outside the legal provisions. Though noble people have contributed to two different accounts and it needs to be consolidated as one fund and managed centrally. I have not seen any move in that direction at least in the public domain. Few days back comrade appointed a rebuilding committee committee again without any legal basis. I presume that people who voted for the comrades wanted financial discipline but with type of ad hoc action certainly will lead to corruption and mis appropriation of public funds. There are no absolutely clean people and remember everybody has a price tag attached to their necks.

This shows the confidence the donors have in the present Govt. They have already seen the past rulers who played around with Tsinami funds. The huge responsibility is on the Govt. to justify the trust all these donors have in the rulers. Let us hope they stand the test!

Did anyone notice that each country contributed a relatively small amount of money? They seem reluctant to trust Sri Lanka anymore after the 2022 crisis, which revealed the true color of corrupt politicians. That stain may linger for a long time

The amount is not enough. I know many Sri Lankans working in foreign countries are readying to send relief materials and money. Financially well off people should celebrate the New year in low key and contribute the money for the sake of the land we live.
