Colombo, August 26 (Daily Mirror) - A team of veterinary experts at the Peradeniya University Veterinary Teaching Hospital has successfully removed a rare external growth from a viper found in the Bokkawala area of Kandy.
The reptile, measuring approximately three feet in length and weighing around 450 grams, was brought to the hospital in a weakened condition. Upon examination, veterinarians discovered an abnormal mass located about two to three inches below the reptile's head.
A delicate surgical procedure was carried out under the supervision of wildlife researcher Anil Wijethunga, with active involvement from wildlife veterinarian Dr. Shashikala Gamage and her students. Prior to the surgery, extensive laboratory tests and sample analysis were conducted to study the nature of the growth.
“Although the surgery was successful, we can only consider this effort truly 100 percent successful once the reptile has been safely released back into a suitable natural habitat,” said Dr. Gamage.
She also expressed gratitude for the guidance provided by Professor Ashoka Dangolla, whose expertise played a crucial role in the procedure’s success.
