Colombo, June 8 (Daily Mirror) - The Dehiwala Police launched an investigation following the theft of a Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, valued at over Rs. 500,000, from the National Zoo in Dehiwala.
The incident is believed to have occurred on the night of June 4, and CCTV footage from a nearby shop reportedly captured the suspected thief near the zoo premises.
According to zoo officials, the bird was one of 30 Blue-and-Yellow Macaws kept in a dedicated enclosure. The theft came to light when the zookeeper during his morning inspection noticed the lock on the cage had been. He immediately alerted senior zoo officials.
A subsequent check confirmed that one of the birds was missing. The zoo administration then filed a formal complaint with the Dehiwala Police through its security department.
This is not the first such incident. On August 8, 2021, another Blue-and-Yellow Macaw from the same enclosure was reported missing and later recovered from a residence in Ratmalana.
Police are investigating the incident with the help of CCTV footage and zoo records.
