Colombo, July 3 (Daily Mirror) - An accused who stood indicted with rape of an underage girl was acquitted by Galle High Court Judge Purnima Paranagama, when the defense informed court that the accused and the victim were married and they are parents of a child.

She was 14 yeas old and he 17 years at the time of the incident in 2020 and the Neluwa police had initiated action.

The young woman with her child appeared before the judge and when the child started to cry she handed over him to a relative present in court and made a statement.

The accused produced their marriage certificate in court

State Counsel Madhavi De Silva made submissions for the state.

So, you rape un underage girl, makes a pregnant and then she has no option other than marrying the guy, and the guy gets acquitted. Perfect rape .

This was still a grave crime, the girl's future was stolen from her at the tender age if 14. She obviously was forced to marry this criminal whereby she was denied every opportunity to choose her own future, let alone her marriage.The offenders should have been declared 'guilty' and punished, even a suspended jail sentence in the least. Why such a long delay in pursuing this case is questionable !

Seriously, is this the way courts interpret “RAPE” in Sri Lanka?? I’m really shocked and utterly disappointed to hear such a verdict!! Just because the rapist produce a marriage certificate could he be found “Not guilty “ and acquitted from the rape charges?? Where’s the justice for the victim?? Shouldn’t the circumstance taken into account?? Whether she gave her consent should be verified at least? “No” should be considered as a Hard NO!! what’s more she was a minor!! I sincerely hope our legal system will pro-actively take the necessary steps to safeguard the victims of rape!!

JUDGE PURNIMA SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE GALLE HIGH COURT, THIS IS ABSURD. THE GIRL WAS 14 WHEN HE RAPED HER THAT ALONG IS A CRIMEM BEING MARRIED IS ONE THING BUT NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO RAPE EVEN HIS WIFE IF NO CONSENT IS GIVEN IT IS RAPE. A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN THIS INSTANCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN NULLED AND THE SUSPECT RAPIST JAILED FOR THE OFFENCE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE FOR HAVING SEX WITH A 14 YEAR OLD. CHILD OR NO CHILD RAPE IS RAPE. SO ANY BOY OR MAN CAN RAPE A GIRL OR WOMAN AND PRODUCE A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE AND ESCAPE BEING PROSECUTED?. WHAT A JOKE. IN THIS INSTANCE THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WAS NOT WORTH THE PAPER IT WAS WRITTEN ON!!!.
